Weekly Incident Tracker - Patterns & Analysis - Aug 3-9, 2026

Overview

Twelve documented incidents across eight countries, with at least 20 in-window fatalities. The Middle Belt / Barkin Ladi corridor in Plateau State recorded three separate Christian killings in seven days; the ADF/ISCAP campaign in Ituri, DR Congo, produced the week's largest single incident at Banana Ecole. State-driven detentions and legal actions accounted for the non-fatal weight of the week (China, Vietnam, India, Pakistan), and Eritrea's eight leaders cross ~8,113 days in detention (22+ years).

Non-state armed groups: Nigeria and DR Congo

Nigeria - Middle Belt: Three separate fatal attacks in one county (Barkin Ladi, Plateau State) on Aug 4, Aug 5, and Aug 9, each involving Fulani herdsmen and a single Christian victim. Same-week Benue killing at Abaushwa (Aug 3) added four fatalities and twelve wounded in a coordinated night raid, with survivors describing 'Allahu Akbar' chants. Pattern continues to reflect systematic targeting of Christian farming communities rather than criminal banditry.

DR Congo - ADF/ISCAP: The Aug 7-8 attack on Banana Ecole (Mambasa Territory, Ituri) killed at least 13 civilians and abducted 14, with homes and vehicles burned - the week's deadliest single incident. An Aug 6 river-boat attack near Biondo added five more deaths. Both incidents fit ADF/ISCAP's escalating tempo against Christian villages in the Ituri Christian belt.

State-driven detentions and legal actions

ERITREA (standing): Eight named house-church leaders arrested in the May 2004 crackdown remain held incommunicado at ~8,113 days (22+ years) as of Aug 9. No family visits, no charges, no trial. The world's longest-running case of arbitrary detention of Christians by a state.

CHINA - Shanghai + Wenzhou (Aug 5): Cross-provincial police raid disappeared Pastor David Tang and six other Christians connected to the Purpose Driven / Biaogan Church network. Whereabouts and charges withheld - textbook Chinese Public Security Bureau house-church suppression pattern.

VIETNAM - Dak Lak (Aug 5): Montagnard Pastor Y Nuen Ayun sentenced to 7.5 years + 4 years' probation under Article 116 (undermining national unity policy) for leading an unregistered Central Highlands congregation. Fits the sustained Article 116 pattern against ethnic-minority unregistered Protestants.

INDIA - Madhya Pradesh (Aug 3): Seven Christian men sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment each plus INR 100,000 fines under state anti-conversion law. Bamanpukur, West Bengal (Aug 3) saw ~100 Catholic families intimidated by a VHP-affiliated group at Divine Mercy Church - the second such incident in the district in three days.

PAKISTAN - Okara (Aug 6): Rasheed Masih, a 48-year-old Christian with reported mental health issues, charged simultaneously under blasphemy Sections 295-A/298, sedition Section 124-A, and the Anti-Terrorism Act - a stacking pattern that undermines any procedural defense.

Ambient / mixed-target incidents

SYRIA - Jaramana (Aug 6): Minibus bombing in a Damascus suburb with mixed Druze and Christian communities. Initial toll of 2 killed was revised same-day by the Syrian health ministry to 0 killed / 14 wounded (3 critical). No group claimed responsibility; investigators point to a suspected IS-linked cell. Included here rather than in the fatal section because there is no confirmed Christian-specific targeting.

Corroboration status

Heavily corroborated (multi-source, wire + monitor): Nigeria Abaushwa (Aug 3); DR Congo Banana Ecole (Aug 7-8); Vietnam Dak Lak sentencing (Aug 5); Syria Jaramana (Aug 6).

Single-source, flagged for corroboration next week: India Madhya Pradesh sentencing (ICC only); China Shanghai raid (ChinaAid only); DR Congo Biondo river-boat (Barnabas only, drawn from IS propaganda claims); Pakistan Okara blasphemy filing (Morning Star only).

Nigeria Middle Belt (Barkin Ladi, Aug 4/5/9): Single detailed source (Morning Star News), but the outlet is on the trusted-monitor list and provides victim identification for two of three incidents.
